Springtime festivals and customs are often related to the traditional Christian roots of the Easter holidays or to traditional efforts to banish winter. But sometimes they are simply sporting competitions, between people or between cows. The burning of the Böögg snowman in Zurich is intended to drive away winter.

The Spring Festival evolved from the annual worship ceremony in ancient times during which people honored the deities and ancestors, and prayed for good harvests in the coming new year. The date and appellation varied widely throughout the history of different feudal dynasties. Spring has arrived in Zurich as soon as the Böögg’s head has exploded. When in April the first flowers and trees start to bloom, the temperatures rise, and the days become longer, the people of Zurich celebrate their traditional spring festival: Sechseläuten, or “Sächsilüüte” as it is known in local dialect.
